Dr. Arrington will present on issues working with art therapy internationally, grant writing, the AVPT (Arrington Visual Preference Test) assessment and art therapy research. Dr. Arrington will additionally be showing the movie she and Judy Rubin produced and previewed at the 40th annual American Art Therapy Association conference last year.

Doris Arrington, ATR-BC, Ed.D, Professor Emeriti, AATA Honorary Life Member Award candidate 2010, was Founding Chair of the Art Therapy Psychology Department at Notre Dame de Namur University. For the past ten years Dr. Arrington, an international speaker, has trained physicians, pastors and counselors in China, Ethiopia, Ireland, Mexico, Poland, Ukraine, South Asia as well as the United States how to use art as healing with the disabled and traumatized. She has written or supervised over 30 funded grants in art therapy; and produced and edited 25 video histories for AATA of their Presidents and Pioneers. She has authored numerous articles, chapters, and manuals, as well as two books and an assessment: Home is where the Art Is and Arts, Angst and Trauma and the Arrington Visual Preference Test. Today she is also an exhibiting painter.

Group Goals:
-Develop the ability to gauge your hunger level
-Identify what you are hungry for
-Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re satisfied
-Identify triggers to emotional eating: feelings, social situations, particular foods
which create anxiety
-Develop nurturing self-care to alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress related to food
-Practice loving kindness toward yourself and your body
-Develop gratitude for food as nourishing fuel for your body

It is possible to change your relationship with yourself, your body, and food. It is possible to stop the pain and self-loathing. Please contact me to set up a half hour no- cost consultation to see if this group could be of benefit to you. This group is facilitated by a registered art therapist. We talk, write, do art. You do not need to be artistically inclined to benefit from the use of art in this group.

Art Therapist Support Group

Feeling fatigued, overworked, isolated? Want to get news, tips or just spend some time creating with your peers? This group may be of benefit to you.

Date: Third Sunday of each month
Time: 5:30pm
Location: SE Hawthorne/Sunnyside neighborhood, Portland, OR
Format: A confidential, semi-structured, peer-to-peer group, moderated by an Art Therapist.
Cost: Sliding scale of $5-$25 based on your ability to pay.

During group meetings, you can expect to: network and connect with peers in a relaxed environment, use art, writing or other creative processes of your choosing to tackle current problems or experiences, and get the support, understanding and constructive feedback of others.

NOTE: The group will be closed at a maximum of 6 members; new members are always encouraged to apply in case there is a slot open on a given month.

RSVP's required! For the benefit of the moderator and your fellow group members, you must make your commitment at least 24 hours in advance. Those who have RSVP'ed a definite "yes" and experience problems should contact the group moderator directly.

Diabetes Art Therapy Support Group for Kids
Leader: Beth Ann Short MA, ATR

D-group is a safe place for youth experiencing Type 1 Diabetes to find community.  In these meetings youth will explore struggles relating to diabetes and coping.  These are confidential art therapy groups and designed to provide creative expression.  Groups will be structured with a check-in time, a short art directive and time for members to process and discuss art created.  Each meeting the group will be led using an art therapy experiential to explore feelings and struggles using a specific directive that will serve as a vehicle for group conversation.  Some topics addressed in this group include when participants first were diagnosed, needles, family support and tips for managing in our busy world.  A healthy snack will be available.

Youth in these groups must have been screened by the leader and have confirmation that they are in the group prior to attending.

Thursday Nights from 6:30-7:45pm Youth Ages 10 and older
Thursday Nights from 6:30-7:45pm Youth Ages 9 and younger

This group is paid weekly with a drop-in rate.

Support Group for Parents of Type 1 Diabetics

Diabetes is complicated!  Parenting is complicated!  Together, both can provide us with incredible opportunities, frustrations and challenges.  We invite you to form community with other parents of diabetics of all ages. Join our monthly meeting to share information, problem solve daily life and receive  support for the emotions that arise from our caregiving and living with Diabetes.  

This Saturday morning "coffee date" group is facilitated by Teresa Weis, LPC, LMFT.  Teresa has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for over 25 years, and has a long history mentoring Type 1 youth, and providing therapeutic support to diabetic families and parents of diabetics.  Start your weekend connecting with community!

Grief Group Youth 8-12 years old

Loss of any kind is life changing for anyone.  Often we find it difficult to support our children in a transition because we ourselves are managing through the experience.  This group is facilitated by a Master’s level clinician and is for youth who have lost a parent, sibling or loved one in death, divorce or separation and are struggling in daily life.  This group will provide youth a community of others experiencing similar struggles, a safe place to explore difficult feelings and increase coping mechanisms in daily life.  This art therapy group will use art as a vehicle to explore these feelings.  The art process will serve as an additional voice in treatment providing participants a safe place to project struggles outside of themselves.  Let the healing begin.
Youth should plan to attend all sessions. Prior art experience NOT necessary.

Saturdays from 10-11:30am
Cost: $20 per session

This art therapy group will use art as a vehicle to explore these feelings.  The art process will serve as an additional voice in treatment providing participants a safe place to project struggles outside of themselves.  Let the healing begin.Participants should plan to attend all scheduled sessions. Prior art experience NOT necessary.

Group Supervision for Masters Level Art Therapists

This group will be meeting once per month.This group will give participants a portion of time for check-in, sharing client art (with signed confidentiality agreements), some art making in response to situations in your own practice of art therapy, group support and hours towards your ATR supervision.All art materials provided.This group is designed for Master's Level clinicians working in the field.Limited to 5 participants please reserve your space ahead of time.

Sundays from 9am-12pm

This is a 3 hour group supervision that includes art making.
Non-members: $45 all art materials included.

Rehabilitation Therapist

Job Description
Telecare's Clark County Evaluation and Treatment Center will be a 12 bed inpatient, acute psychiatric unit. An interdisciplinary team will provide progressive recovery based services to adults who have mental illness.
The Rehabilitation Therapist provides rehabilitation therapy services to clients, both on an individual and group basis, and coordinates all rehabilitation activities using Psychiatric Rehabilitation concepts and Recovery Philosophy.

QUALIFICATIONS
-One year of experience in an inpatient psychiatric setting is required
-A B.S./B.A. or M.S./M.A. in Occupational, Recreational, Music, Dance, Drama or Art Therapy or Vocational Counseling.  License will commensurate with the degree
-Drivers License and insurability may be required
-Must have a strong understanding of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Concepts and Recovery philosophy
-Applicant may be fingerprinted and must receive clearance from the Washington State Patrol Identification and Criminal History Section
